Up to the present time, Yen Bai is the province with the largest cinnamon growing area and output in Northern Vietnam, with over 81 thousand hectares, accounting for 1/3 of the province's planted forest area, concentrated mainly in Van district. Yen (45.2 thousand hectares; accounting for 55.7% of the province's cinnamon area) and Tran Yen district (19 thousand hectares; accounting for 23.4% of the province's cinnamon area); In addition, it is not widely distributed in some districts such as Van Chan (9 thousand hectares), Luc Yen (5.9 thousand hectares) and Yen Binh (2.1 thousand hectares).
The whole province currently has over 81,000 hectares of cinnamon, concentrated mainly in the districts of Van Yen, Tran Yen and Van Chan, Luc Yen, Yen Binh districts. In particular, in the districts of Van Yen and Tran Yen, cinnamon trees cover all communes and towns. On average every year, localities exploit about 18,000 tons of cinnamon bark; 85,000 tons of branches and leaves with an average output of 600 tons/year and 200,000 m3 of cinnamon wood for wood processing and export. Van Yen cinnamon is said to be the best cinnamon variety in Vietnam, with the second highest essential oil content in Vietnam (after Tra My cinnamon - Quang Nam).
Currently in Yen Bai province, there are 16 cinnamon essential oil extraction factories on a relatively large scale using boiler technology to extract essential oils, with a total capacity of 1,000 tons of essential oil products/year. This is a closed technology process for separating cinnamon essential oil using temperature as a boiler system, without using chemicals or other agents.
In addition, there are more than 400 small-scale household cinnamon essential oil processing establishments (about 300 kg of product/year, but operating irregularly), mainly operating by manual method, with high output. Processing essential oils per year on average 300-800 kg/facility.
In recent times, the connection between businesses, cooperatives and cinnamon growers has received attention from authorities at all levels in the province to focus on developing and forming value chains linking production and consumption of cinnamon products. Organic cinnamon. To date, the entire province has over 6,757 hectares of cinnamon certified organic. Of which, Van Yen district has 4,612 hectares and Tran Yen 2,145 hectares (Son Ha Van Yen Company: 3,541.5 hectares, OLam Van Yen Company: 1,071 hectares, Vietnam Que Hoi Cooperative: 2,100 hectares, General Cooperative Hong Ca service complex: 45 hectares).
From the bark, wood, leaves to the cinnamon root, all have value for use, so cinnamon is considered a multi-benefit crop, with high economic value. Cinnamon products are one of the main products participating in the agricultural and forestry export market of Yen Bai province. In addition to cinnamon essential oil, a number of other products produced from cinnamon tend to develop such as : Cinnamon tea, cinnamon cleaning liquid, handicraft products, souvenirs....
Up to now, the Yen Bai cinnamon brand has affirmed its value in the domestic and international markets, typically Van Yen cinnamon has been certified for registration by the Department of Intellectual Property (Ministry of Science and Technology) geographical indication since January 2010 and the Kingdom of Thailand has protected geographical indications for cinnamon bark products in Thailand since 2020. This is a rare thing in the world, another country protects Vietnamese products. This confirms that the quality of Van Yen cinnamon products is famous outside the territory. In particular, from August 1, 2020, Van Yen cinnamon, Yen Bai province is one of 39 Vietnamese products protected by the EU when implementing the Vietnam - EU Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA).
