VIETNAM CALAMUS TETRADACTYLUS HANCE RATTAN VERY FLEXIBLE MATERIAL

Compared to other rattan trees of the same species, the image of sticky rattan trees seems more familiar to many people. Along the roads throughout the Northern villages, you can easily see this plant growing wild on the roadside.

The scientific name of the sticky rattan tree is Calamus Tetradactylus Hance. As for Vietnamese people, in addition to the common name May Nep, it also has a number of other names such as: mute rattan, large intestine rattan, garden rattan. The commercial name of sticky rattan is: White rattan. According to research from some sources, we knows that sticky rattan belongs to the family: Areca palm - like Palmae in the same family as Calamus platyacanthus tree.

Interesting information about the morphological characteristics of the sticky rattan
Sticky rattan is an underground plant with a shape similar to a ginger root. However, it has a black shell and is as hard as a horn. Below the underground stem is the location of the roots of the sticky rattan plant. Its roots are considered to be quite strong, with a solid shell on the outside and a rather hard, dry core inside.

Rattan species often like to grow into bushes, this characteristic of rattan is quite similar to some tree species such as bamboo, bamboo shoots, bamboo shoots, and luong. Old clumps of trees often have large underground stems and large root systems. During the growth process, the roots often tend to float above the ground. The trunk of the tree is only as big as a finger, but when climbing on a tree it can be up to 20 - 30m long.

When climbing, it uses "rattan arms" - a part of the leaf sheath on the stem grows and from the 6th leaf onwards "rattan arms" appear. On the "rattan hands" there will be claws so that the rattan body can cling tightly and stretch its long top onto the tree to absorb sunlight. The reason for such a phenomenon is because the vital energy body cannot branch on its own.
The rattan body is covered with sheaths and covered with thorns all over. Because the thorns of sticky rattan are quite hard, harvesting rattan often causes many inconveniences and dangers. The rattan body is about 10 - 15m long. In mountainous areas, the tree grows well and its trunk can be up to 30m long. When the tops of sticky rattan stems are lost, they will not grow in length, leading to poor fiber quality. This is considered a special feature of sticky rattan compared to other climbing plants.

The appearance of sticky rattan leaves has a quite special shape, it is a single leaf type with very deep feathers, similar to a compound leaf. When young, rattan leaves have long stems. When the tree is mature, the leaves can be up to 1 meter long and can contain 14 - 20 leaflets on a leaf shaft. Did you know that rattan leaves can be green all year round and can live for up to 4-5 years without losing their leaves? This is a unique point that Papasan Vietnam believes only appears in this special species of rattan.

Compared to the fruit of the double honey tree, the sticky rattan fruit is more modest in size. Sticky rice rattan has spherical fruit, fruit diameter is 8mm, the fruit head has a pointed beak and an existing stigma. The skin of the fruit is covered with scales arranged in 18 vertical rows. Young fruits are green and turn yellow-gray when old. Young rattan seeds are ivory white when ripe, the seeds are dark brown and the fruit pulp is succulent. Cones usually have a bitter taste when ripe, the fruit is sweet and can be eaten.
