Ginger is a necessary ingredient in the kitchen, but buying a lot of it is not easy to preserve. Below are a few ways to preserve ginger so it won't spoil for several months.
When choosing to buy, you should choose ginger that is moderate in size but heavy and sturdy. Do not choose tubers that are crushed, have wrinkled skin or show signs of mold.
1. Store in the refrigerator
Before storing in the refrigerator, ginger must be washed of surrounding soil and sand and then drained. Use a layer of foil to cover each tuber or wrap it in a dry towel and put it in a zip bag to squeeze out all the air. Storing in the cooler like this can keep ginger fresh for quite a long time without degrading, retaining its aroma.
2. Store in the freezer
Wash the ginger, cut it into thin slices or slices, store it in a zip bag that squeezes out all the air or a box with a tight lid, then place it in the freezer for storage. When you need to take out a few pieces, use them directly without defrosting. Ginger stored in the freezer is always fresh and has a unique aroma.
If you don't have time to slice or dice, you can wrap the washed ginger root around a layer of plastic wrap, then put it in the freezer.
Ginger quickly dries and sprouts, so it needs to be stored properly to ensure it stays fresh longer.
3. Preserve by burying in sand
Pour clean, dry sand into a large bowl or plate, bury the ginger in it, and leave it in a cool, ventilated place.
This method of preservation helps ginger stay fresh for a long time and not dry out.
4. Preserve by soaking in water
Wash the ginger thoroughly, removing surface stains and parts that have turned black. Put the ginger in a container filled with water. Make sure the water covers the entire ginger, close the lid tightly and store in the refrigerator. Replace with fresh clean water once a week. This preservation method can keep ginger fresh for about a month.
5. Store with foil
Wrap the ginger tightly in foil and place it in a cool and ventilated place in the house, no need to keep it in the refrigerator. Foil can be replaced regularly. This method of preservation prevents ginger from sprouting, drying out, molding and preserving for quite a long time.
6. Soak with vinegar
With this method, you should use young ginger, wash it and cut it into thin slices. After squeezing with salt, blanch the ginger in boiling water to reduce the spiciness. Take the ginger out, squeeze out the excess water, and drain.
Boil a mixture of water, sugar, and vinegar in a 1:1:1 ratio. Slice the ginger then put it in a clean, dry glass jar, pour in a mixture of sugar, water, and boiled vinegar. Leave at room temperature for a few days, then place in the refrigerator.
This way of preservation not only preserves the freshness and inherent aroma of ginger but also makes use of the soaking water. Drinking a mixture of water and sipping pieces of ginger soaked in vinegar can effectively help burn fat, lose weight and prevent hair loss.
7. Drying
For large amounts of ginger, if you want to preserve it longer, you can use the drying method.
Wash the ginger, drain it, cut it into thin pieces and then dry it in direct sunlight or in the oven. Dried ginger can be used for a long time without losing the flavor or hot properties of fresh ginger.
